Knowledge Base - Glossary of Terms
Glossary is usually defined as an alphabetical list of technical terms in some specialized field of knowledge. This knowledge base glossary provides a collection of knowledge base documents that define many technical terms. These terms are arranged alphabetically, but you can quickly jump to a specific term by selecting its first letter from the index of the knowledge base glossary below.

C
A programming language, developed for structured programming, that bears a strong resemblance to Pascal.

Cache Memory
Fast memory used to improve the performance of a CPU. Instructions that will soon be executed are placed in a cache memory shortly before they are needed. The process speeds up the operation of the CPU.

Calibration
The process of adjusting the electronics of an analog input to improve its accuracy. Sometimes this is done by turning potentiometers with a screwdriver. A more convenient way is to make the adjustments in software.

Call
A software instruction used to pass control to a subroutine, control is returned to the original program at the point of the "call" statement. Often used for specialized routines such as "analog read" from a data acquisition system.

Capacity
Amount of storage space in a memory expressed a number of bits or number of words.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The central part of a computer system that performs operations on data. In a personal computer the CPU is typically a single microprocessors integrated circuit.

Chart Recorder
A chart recorder is an instrument used to record various process and electrical signals.

Chromatograph
An instrument used in chemical analysis of gases and liquids.

Chrominance
The color part of a video signal, relating to the hue and saturation but not to the brightness or luminance of the signal.

Chrominance Filter
An electronic circuit, usually in the form of a notch filter, used to remove chrominance color information from a video signal.
